The smart steering option gives you complete control over your race. You can still turn tightly into corners, whizz past your opponents and race as fast as you want. This function simply helps you stay on track and prevents you from going off course. It redirects your kart back to the tarmac as soon as you fall off the sides.
Here are the two different methods for turning it.
Method #1- Turn it On or Off at the beginning of the race
After you’ve selected your character in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a kart selection screen will appear. The screen will have a +/- symbol somewhere on it’s bottom right. Simply press the + or – button to bring up a pop up menu with three options. The first option is smart steering, the second one is to turn on tilt controls and third one is auto accelerate. Select the first option and press ‘L’ to enable automatic steering. Press ‘L’ again to disable it.
To know whether your option is on or off, look for an antenna behind your kart. If it is present, automatic steering is enabled. Alternatively, the lack of an antenna means that automatic steering is disabled.
Method #2- Turn Automatic Steering on or Off during the race
You can also turn it on in the middle of a race. Simply press + or – and a menu will open. Now press L to turn it on or off.
If it is on during the race, the antenna will glow yellow every time it becomes activated. However, if you have a good race, there is a good chance that it will not become active.
Turning Automatic Steering On or Off – What is better?
Turning it on is highly useful for inexperienced players or for players racing in 200cc speed races. It helps you stay on course and prevents you from going off course. Of course, you will still be able to perform all the other functions you want.
However, experienced strategic players might prefer to have it off. This is because certain strategies require you to go off course. This includes going off course to use gliders. If it is on, you won’t be able to use the gliders efficiently. Thus, it is better to turn it off in such scenarios. Additionally, you won’t be able to get the ultra mini/turbo boost while drifting. This is because smart steering will end your drift before you can reach the purple sparks. Hence, automatic steering can be very irritating for pro players.

Get Infinite Coins by Turning Automatic Steering On Or Off
There is a small hack that allows players to earn infinite coins in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe by simply turning it on.
You will need to select multiplayer 2 player mode and VS race. Then, you can choose any good character and kart with decent speed and acceleration. Now you will turn on automatic steering by pressing +/- and L in the kart selection screen. You will also turn on auto acceleration by pressing R on the same screen.
Alter your race setting so that your speed is 200cc and select the following options; no teams, no items, no CPU and all vehicles.
Select any race course you want and your character will now complete the race without any help. The auto steering option will automatically drive your kart and prevent it from going off course. You will earn 10 coins per race and you can repeat this process as many times as you want to get your desired number of coins.
